Led two sets to zero by Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner finally won in five sets, in his first grand slam final.

Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open this Sunday, January 28, after being led two sets to zero by his opponent, Daniil Medvedev. The game seemed to be over for the Russian, but his opponent turned things around to win in five sets (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3). He thus opens his account in a grand slam, for his first final.

However, the game started off badly for the Italian. Daniil Medvedev won the first two sets in one hour and twenty-five minutes of play. Alexander Zverev’s scorer in the semi-final seemed to have the game in hand and was thus heading towards his second trophy of the grand slam, after the US Open in 2021. More effective in the first balls, more aggressive, the Russian had dominated the first set (3-6) and calmly won the second (3-6), in a fight which seemed to him then acquired.

But that was without counting on the resilience of Jannik Sinner, heroic defeater of Novak Djokovic in the previous round, and who had won in the last three confrontations against his opponent of the day. In addition, the Russian had spent more than twenty hours on the courts, with three matches played in five sets. A physical impact which ended up making him collapse.
